47-day siege in 1863
Mississippi's Vicksburg was the site of one of the Civil War's most pivotal battles. After a 47-day siege in 1863, its fall gave the Union control of the entire Mississippi River. The city reportedly <hl>did not celebrate July 4th for 81 years</hl> afterward.
