The mastodon and the woolly mammoth were actually <hl>very different animals</hl> — mastodons had shorter, stockier bodies with cone-shaped teeth for browsing forests, while mammoths had flat teeth for grazing grasslands. They split from a common ancestor 25 million years ago.
